Forest ecosystems of Canada

Issues

Approximately 10% of the world's forests are to be found on Canadian territory. When planning use and conservation strategies for this important national treasure, Canada must take into account national as well as worldwide preoccupations and trends.

Sustained and cooperative efforts from all stakeholders will make it possible to accommodate the interests of all the different forest users while maintaining in the long term:

• the diversity and abundance of forest ecosystems;
• the growth of the forest industry;
• public access to forest territories for leisure activities.

Achieving a balance between the growing need for fibre and the protection of this resource is complex and gives rise to many issues, including:

• climate change;
• maintaining the competitiveness of the forest industry;
• measuring forest durability;
• forest health.
